Pedro Castillo, Peru’s democratically elected president, was ousted on Dec. 7, after two previous impeachment attempts. Castillo’s preventive detention was extended for another 18 months and will last until June 2024. The Peruvian Parliament also rejected on Friday (16) the proposal to bring forward to 2023 the elections that would take place in 2026 and other institutional maneuvers may yet happen . Even the headquarters of the Nuevo Peru party was raided by the police yesterday.
Since then, eighteen people* have died in demonstrations calling for the release of the former president. More than 500 people have already been injured, most of them after clashes with the military in a state of national emergency.
PSOL supports the parties and movements that demand the calling of new elections, the free right to protest and stands in solidarity with the families and organizations of the demonstrators who were murdered in the demonstrations.
